I've thrown away more of PrivateLets than currently exists in it. Multiple attempts at a tenant portal. A calendar view I was sure I'd use constantly and opened maybe four times. An entire billing system built around a pricing model I abandoned before a single real customer saw it.
The pattern I noticed, looking back, is that the features I actually kept using were boring. A table of properties. A ledger of transactions. A list of maintenance requests with a status on each one. Nothing clever. The clever stuff is what I stopped opening.
There's a version of "features" that means "things a demo looks impressive doing," and a version that means "things you open without thinking about it because they're just where the information lives." Ten years in, I only trust the second kind.
The screenshots on this site are close to what the app actually looks like today, not a highlight reel of everything it's ever tried to be. Most of what didn't make the cut simply stopped getting used, and I deleted the code once I noticed.
If a feature isn't boring and load-bearing within a few months, it probably shouldn't have shipped.
